Spain’s Judiciary Scrambles to Stop Secession after Rajoy’s Legislative Defeat

By Marcelo Fernandez de la Mora

After Spain’s national police released a report yesterday evening outlining the architects of Catalonia’s secessionist movement, Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena has indicted Marta Rovira and Neus Lloveras for misappropriation of public funds, rebellion, and sedition.

The criminal prosecution of these politicians as well as that of Jordi Sanchez, Carme Forcadell, Carles Puigdemont, Clara Ponsatí, and Josep Rull puts the pro-independence majority in Catalonia’s parliament at risk if they take their seats next week.

The accused are liable to pre-trial detention and may face up to 51 years in prison if declared guilty.
